Greece

The small Greek island Agathonisi is the most northern of the archipelago of the Dodekanes. It is appropriate for about 23 km in the south of Samos and only 12 km in the west of the coast of the Turkish mainland.


The Greek island Agios Efstratios is situated in the northern Ägäis about 30 km in the south of Limnos and 200 km in the northeast of Athens. Most of that about 250 constant inhabitants are living in the port place of the same name predominantly on fishing and the agriculture. The tourism so far hardly plays a role on the island which can be reached only with difficulties.

 

Aigina is a Greek island in the Saronian gulf. The island has a surface of 83 sq.km and 9.500 inhabitants. The principal place (5000 inhabitants) is called like the island. Emphasis of the agriculture on the island is the cultivation of pistachios. The tourism plays also an increasing role. The principal place of the tourism is Agia Marina.

 

The Greek Mediterranean island Alimia or Almia belongs to the archipelago of the Dodekanes in the Ägäis. Together with the rock island Tragoussa, lain in the south, on which only a beacon stands, forms it nearly the form of a question mark, since in the west the bay Ormos Amelias cuts deeply into the land mass of the island.


Alonnisos is the the third island of the northern Sporades, situated 2 km in the northeast of Skopelos. It is 20 km long and 4,5 km wide. The soil of the rocky island consists mainly of limestone. On it are growing spruces, olives, figs, almonds and vines. In the wild and damp beaches are living sea-dogs and wild pigeons.


Amorgos is one of the eastern Cyclades in the Ägäis Sea, situated in the southeast of Naxos, 127 sq.km large and from elongated shape, pulled through of a high, bald mountain rang, partially wooded and it has 1.700 inhabitants (2002). The today most important object of interest of Amorgos is the rock monastery Chozoviotissa, underneath the summit Profitis Ilias, it is considered as one of the architecturally most interesting monasteries of the Ägäis and is compared frequently with the Meteora monasteries.

 

Amouliani is an inhabited Greek island in the northern Ägäis. It has a surface of 12 sq.km with a length of 9 kilometers and a width of up to 3,4 kilometers. About 630 inhabitants constantly live on the island; in the summer the number increases easily to over 2000, since numerous emigrated inhabitants return in holidays on their homeland island.

 

Anafi is a small island in southeast of the Cyclades in Greece with approximately 300 inhabitants. It has a width of 6 km, a length of 12 km and a surface of approximately 38 sq.km and rises up to 582 meters. On Anafi there is a post office, a doctor and a heli coil haven.

 

Andros is an island in the Greek archipelago, and is behind Naxos the second largest island of the Cyclades. Principal place is the pictorial located Andros of the same name, on a narrow promontory at the east coast of the island. From the port place which is located at the west coast Gavrion exists a regular ferry connection to the mainland (Rafina) and to the other Cyclades.

 

Antikythira is a small Greek island between Kythira and Crete. The total area amounts to 20 sq.km. In the only place Potamos are living 36 inhabitants. Well - known became the island by a Greek ship wreck, which was found in 1900 in front of the coast. Under the saved artifacts was also an attention exciting gear wheel mechanism, the in such a way specified mechanism of Antikythera.


Antiparos is a small Greek island in the ägäish archipelago of the Cyclades. The only about 35 sq.km large island is from its larger sister island Paros only separated by a 1,5 sq.km spread Sund. Astypalea is an island in the Ägäis, which belongs to the group of the Dodekanes. The tourism did not discover this remote island so correctly yet, why it is also still a sleeper.


The 28 sq.km large Chalki is a Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea in the west of Rhodos, which belongs to the Dodekanes archipelago in the Ägäis. A main source of income at the end of the 20. Century was also here the sponge diving.

The Greek island Epano Koufonissi is a small east cyclades island and is appropriate for 5 km in the southeast from Naxos. With an expansion of approximately 4 x 3 km the nearly circular island is the smallest inhabited island of the east cyclades. Main branches of trade are fishing, the only meager agriculture as well as the blossoming tourism in the meantime.


Erikoussa is the most northern of the Othonian - or Diapontian islands. The island belonges to Greece and is appropriate for only about 25 km far away of Korfu. Erikoussa offers some hotels and very long sand beaches with highly transparent water.


Euböa is with a surface of 3,657 sq.km and a population of 186.000 inhabitants the largest Greek island behind Crete. With the mainland, from which the distant at one place is only

37 m, is the island connected by two bridges.


The small Greek cyclades island Folegandros is appropriate for about 160 km in the southeast of Athens and 40 km in the northwest of Santorin in the Ägäis. It has a length of approximately 14,5 km, a width of max. 4 km and a surface of 32 sq.km, the highest collection amounts to 445 meters.

 

Fourni is a small archipelago in the eastern Ägäis in the triangle between Patmos, Samos and Ikaria, the “Ikarian sea”. The island has one of the largest fishing ports of the Ägäis with a remarkable fleet at fishing vessels, the inhabitants puts large value on its marine tradition.

 

The Greek island Gavdos is appropriate for about 36 km in the south of Crete and is the most southern island of Europe behind the Canaries. Gavdos has 45 inhabitants , it is 9 km long and 4,5 km wide. There is only one source of fresh water in the pine forest behind the bay of Korfos, in all other respects is the drinking water in cisterns caught rain water.

 

The island Glaros belongs to the small eastern Cyclades. It is appropriate for about 1,7 km in the south of Koufonissi and only a few hundred meters in the east of Kato Koufonissi. Glaros is tiny small, flat, uninhabited and nearly vegetationless. Who wants to visit this isle, can reach it from Koufunissi with a fishing boat.


Gyali is a small, uninhabited Greek island in the Ägäis, situated in approximately 8 km in the south of Kos and 3,5 km in the north of Nisyros. Today on the island, a large scale of pumice stone is diminished, which changed the appearance of the island strongly.

 

The today uninhabited Greek island Gyaros is situated in the Ägäis between the larger islands Andros, Tinos, Siros, Kythnos and Kea. The isle measures about 8,5 x 4,5 km and has a surface of 37 sq.km. It is vegetation-poor, rocky and reaches a height of 490 meters.


The Greek island Hydra or Ydra belongs to the group of the Saronian islands and is situated in approximately 65 km in the southwest of Athens. It is out started several times daily by the port Piräus; also to the neighbour islands at least regular ferry connections exists in the main season.


Ikaria is a Greek island in the eastern Ägäis, it is appropriate for 19 km in the west of the more well-known island Samos. Inousse (Oinoússai) is a small Greek archipelago in the eastern Ägäis. The island is situated in about two kilometers in front of the Turkish mainland coast. To the west of it is the larger island Chios located.


Inousses is a small inhabited Greek island in the Ägäis. It belongs to the eastern Ägäis islands and is situated in the only about 17 kilometers broad Sund between the Greek island Chios and the Turkish mainland. The island possesses some beautiful and uncrowded beaches.


Ios is an island of the Cyclades in the Ägäis Sea, in the south of Naxos and in the north of Santorini, it is 15 km long and 7 km wide, 105 sq.km largely and up to 735 m high. The very dry island brings only to a small extent out agricultural products ( especially honey and goat cheese).


The only 18 sq.km large island Iraklia is situated in about 10 km in the south of Naxos and counts over 100 inhabitants (strong migration to the land in the last years), who live in the small port place Agio Georgios or in that 4 km in the south lain island center Iraklia.


Ithaka is one of the Ionian islands in front of the west coast of Greece. It is 96 sq.km largely and has 5.000 inhabitants. Highest collection is the Niritos with 809m. Principal place and most important port is Vathi. The island is very green and has many beautiful bays.


Kalamos (or also Nísi Kálamos) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea and belongs to the archipelago of the Ioni islands. The island is inhabited and counts about 600 constant inhabitants; in the summer the number of inhabitants can treble itself easily by the vacation sojourn of the spoiled inhabitants. The overall tourism is here still unknown, but private accomodations are available.


Kalauria, was the antiquity a city and island in the Saronian sea bosom, at the coast of Argolis (the current Poros), famous because of its Poeidontemple. This day one recognizes the expanded, but inconspicuous remainders of the temple.


Kalymnos is an island in the Ägäis, which belongs to the group of the Dodekanes. It is 109 square kilometers large and has approximately 13.000 inhabitants, from whom nearly 2/3 are living in the island capital. Beside the sponge diving, they have also a fishery.


Karpathos is a Greek island and is situated on half distance between Rhodos and Crete. It is with 330 square kilometers the second largest island of the Dodekanes and has nearly 5.400 inhabitants. Windsurfers love the island, because of its good wind statistic.


The small Greek island Kassos or Kasos is appropriate for about 7 km in the west of Karpathos and 70 km in the northeast of Crete. Today still 1.500 inhabitants are living in the port place Fry as well as in the smaller villages. At present the tourism plays still no role, this will however in the next years probably change.


Kastellorizo is an island in approximately 3 km in front of the Turkish coast, belonging to Greece. It is appropriate for 120 km in the east of Rhodos and is with only 9 sq.km the smallest and most remote inhabited island of the Dodekanes. The principal place of the island is to a large extent a spirit city. In recent time nevertheless a modest tourism on the island starts.


Kastos is a small inhabited Greek island in the Ionian Sea. There is not an overall tourism yet; only the island which can be reached quite with difficulty becomes however more popular at sailors. Accommodations and taverns at the port are available. There are bath bays available.


The small Greek island Kato Koufonissi belongs to the small eastern Cyclades and is appropriate for 6 km in the south of Naxos. Kato Koufonissi is visited particularly in the summer by daily guests by Epano Koufonissi with fishing boats. Accommodations are missing.


The Greek island Kea is the most western inhabited island of the Cyclades and is appropriate for approximately 20 km in the east of the Cap Sounion on the peninsula Attika and 60 km in the southeast from Athens. Most important places are the port place Korissia as well as the principal place Joulis with the most inhabitants, lain in the inside of the island.


Kephallonia is a Greek island at the exit of the gulf of Patras. The island has some natural characteristics. On the mountain Ainos (1628 m) grows the black fir, which can be found only on Kephallonia. Beautiful sand beaches are situated in the southwest close to the city Lixouri and delightful bays in the south between Argostoli and Skala.


Keros is an uninhabited Greek island, which became admited by archaeological founds. On the island, serving only as goat pasture some bronze-temporal excavations were accomplished.


The only 35 sq.km large Greek cyclades island Kimolos is situated in only one kilometer in the northeast of the larger sister island Milos and about 140 kilometers in the southeast of Athens. Most of the inhabitants of the very water-poor island are still living on fishing and the agriculture.


Korfu is the most northern island of the Ioni islands. It is situated in face of the south point of Italy and is separated by a narrow from the Greek and Albanian mainland. It has a surface of 593 square kilometers and is about 62 km long. The capital of the island is the port Kerkyra with a number of approximately 40.000 inhabitants.


Kos is an island at the coast of Karien, counted to the Dodekanes. Main port and capital of the island are called also Kos, which is the touristic and cultural center. The island is well-known by their long sand beaches with large hotels, but it offers also the attraction of remote villages.


Crete (Greek Κρήτη, Kriti) is the largest Greek island and with 8.331 sq.km surface as well as 1,040 km coastal line the fifth-largest island at the Mediterranean sea. The island Gavdos, which is located in front of the Cretean southwest coast, marks the southern inhabited point of Europe. Crete has a very mild mediterranean climate.


Kythira is a Greek island in front of the southeast point of the Peloponnes. Because of the meagreness of the country numerous inhabitants emigrated, particularly to Australia. Today are living still 3400 humans on the island.


Kythnos, an island in the Ägäis, belongs to the group of the Cyclades. The population lives mainly on agriculture and cattle breeding. As holiday island Kythnos is visited particularly by people from Athens, which applies to many of the cyclades islands.


Lefkada is a Greek island at the Ioni sea, which is connected with the mainland by a bridge. The island has a surface of 293 square kilometers. On Lefkada there is no mass tourism like at Crete or the Balearic islands.


Léros (also: Léro) is a 53 sq.km large and up to 323 m high Greek island in the Ägäis Sea, in front of the coast of small Asia, and the gulf of Mendelia. The island belongs to the group of the Dodekanes, in the south of the Sporades.


Lesbos is a Greek island at the Ägäis close to the Turkey.


Limnos is a Greek island in the north of the Ägäis. The island is 476 sq.km largely and has up-to-date approximately 17.000 inhabitants. The island belongs to Athen.


Lipsi, also Lipsos, is a Greek island in the eastern Ägäis. It has a surface of 16 sq.km and a 35 km long coast. Lipsi is situated in only a few kilometers in the east of Patmos and belongs thereby to the archipelago of the Dodekanes.


The meanwhile uninhabited Greek island Makronissos is appropriate for only well 4 km of the Greek mainland, in the east in front of the port Lavrion and/or of the Cap Sounion. It is the most western island of the Cyclades. The meager island is 14 km long and has a width of only 3 km. The surface amounts to nearly 19 sq.km.


With only about 3 sq.km is the island Mathraki with 100 inhabitants the smallest of the inhabited islands and belongs to the Greek archipelago of the Diapontian islands or Othonian islands. Most visitors remain only few hours on the island; few taverns stand for them for refreshment for order.


Meganisi is a Greek island and belongs to the archipelago of the Ionian islands . The name means: “The large one (island)”. The tourism becomes ever more important. There are available more and more guest beds in hotels, apartments and private accomodations.


Milos is an island of the Cycladen at the Ägäis. It is situated in the western range of the Cycladen on half-way between Athens and Crete. Milos has a surface of 151 square kilometers and about 5,000 inhabitants. The principal place of the island is called Plaka.


Mykonos is an island of the Cycladen and is situated in the southeast from Tinos. The island is 20 x 14 km largely and has a surface of 86 sq.km. Mykonos is today one of the most popular holiday islands of Greece with its own airport.


Naxos is an island at the Ägäis, the largest of the Kyklades and is 448 sq.km large. Since 1980 has the tourism a central meaning for the naxic economy.


Nea Kameni is a small uninhabited Greek volcanic island in the Caldera of Santorini. It was originated in the 16. Century and was constantly increased by several volcanic eruptions. The nearly vegetationless island is started in the season daily by numerous tourist boats.


Nisyros is an island in the Ägäis, which belongs to the group of the Dodekanes. It is one of the most beautiful nature marriage worthynesses of the whole Dodekanes. The principal place is Mandráki at the north coast of the island.


Othoni is the largest of the Diapontián or Othonian islands with approximately 100 constantly here living inhabitants and a surface of approximately 10 sq.km. Most the inhabitant living in the place Othoni live of the agriculture (main cultivation of olive) as well as of the fishery and the very meager tourism.


Oxeia or Oxia is an uninhabited Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Those about four kilometers long and up to 1,7 kilometers wide island is situated for well 1,500 meters in front of the Greek mainland in the proximity of the delta of the river Acheloos and 30 kilometers in the west of the city Messolonghi. It is also located at the western entrance of the gulf of Patras.


The small uninhabited island Palea Kameni is situated in the Caldera of the Greek island Santorini in the Ägäis. It is from volcanic origin and developed before scarcely 2000 years.

The island is nearly completely vegetationless and possesses as only building a small chapel in the north.


Paros is an island at the Ägäis and dues to the Cycladen and to the west of Naxos. In the center of the island rises the 771 m high Profitis Ilias. Paros is the native country of the poet Archilochos and the painter Polygnotos.


The Greek island Patmos belongs geographically and politically to the archipelago of the Dodekanes in the east Ägäis. It is 34,5 sq.km largely, the highest collection reaches 269 m. The vegetation is very meager. In a long put bay as ideal nature harbour is the port of the island situated, here are concentrating the touristic accommodations and industrial concerns.


Paxos is a Greek island, which belongs to the group of the Ionian islands. The island is the smallest of the mian islands of this archipelago. The east of the island is rich at very beautiful bath bays, the west coast drops in steep aborts and cliffs to the sea.


Poliegos or Políagios is an uninhabited Greek island in the Ägäis. The island belongs to the Cyclades and is situated in about 150 kilometers in the southeast of Athens and 140 kilometers in the north of the island Crete. The only 14 sq.km small island Pserimos is situated between Kos (13km in the northwest of Kos city) and Kalymnos and one starts predominantly by trip ships. In the only place of the practically auto-free island are living about 100 inhabitants; in the summer many inhabitants, emigrated into all over the world, come back on their island, so that then the number of inhabitants rises to nearly over 400.


Psira is a small and nowadays uninhabited Greek island in the north of Crete. The island is situated in front of the east cretian coast in the Miabello bay and belongs to the prefecture Lasithi. On Psira are the ruins of a minoic port.


Rhodos is the main island of the Greek group of isles Dodekanes („the twelve islands “) at the east Ägäis. The landscape of Rhodos is especially at the middle of the island very hilly.

Rhodos has an account of over 3.000 sun hours at the year and is because of that, one of the sunniest regions of Europe.


Rinia is a today uninhabited Greek island in the Ägäis, which belongs to the archipelago of the Cyclades. Since the island does not possess considerable objects of interest, it, contrary to Delos, starts only occasionally by tourist ships. The bays of Rinia serve however ever more frequently than anchorage for yachts.


Salamis is a small island in the Saronian gulf. It is situated in range of vision of Piräus, Athens port in the antique.

Sifnos is a Greek cyclades island and is appropriate for about 130 km in the southeast of Athens in the Ägäis, surrounded by the neighbour islands Milos, Serifos and Paros. With the ferry one needs 5-6 hours from the port Piräus.


Sikinos is an island in the Ägäis sea and belongs to the Greek Nomos of the Cycladen , 42 sq.km largely, rocky, in the valleys very fruitfully. Nearby the city Sikinos is a a church of converted temples of the Apollon Pythios situated.

Skiathos is an island and a city in the Ägäis sea. Typical products of Skiathos are olives and wine. Skiathos belongs today to the Greek Nomos Magnesia and counts 5.100 durable inhabitants (2002), 90% of it live in the principal place.


Skopelos is a Greek island and a place in the Ägäis sea, situated in the northeast of Euböa, part of the northern Sporades, 85 sq.km large, it has 4.700 durable inhabitants (2002) and rises up to 680 m over the sea level. Skópelos is strongly wooded; typical products are wine and plums.


Skorpios is a small inhabited Greek island in the Ionian sea. It belongs to the Ionian islands and is situated in one kilometer in the east of the neighbour island Lefkas close of the port place Nidri; the island Meganisi is situated scarcely 2 kilometers in the south. The Greek capital Athens is located 250 kilometers in the southeast.


Skyros is the largest island of the northern Sporades in the Ägäis sea, situated in the east of Euböa and is 204 sq.km largely. The island is mentioned frequently in the legends of the Achilleus and Theseus. During the northern part of the island is meager, stony and uninhabited , is the southern part shaped of sumptuous vegetation and large pine woods.


Spetses is a Greek island in the Saronian gulf. The name comes from the Venice time as the island “Isola de Spezzie” was called, what means the island of the herbs. It is well 22 square kilometers large and has about 4.000 inhabitants.


The Strofades are two small rock isles in the Ionian sea. It concerns thereby the islands Arpia and Stamfani. They are situated in 27 nautical miles far away from Zakynthos and the Peloponnes. The islands are very flat and both covered by more closely vegetation. There are no sand beaches on the two islands. Well - known are the islands in completely Greece for their nature beautifulnesses.


Symi is one to about 60 sq.km large Greek island in the Ägäis and belongs to the group of the Dodekanes. The island has a very strongly fissured coastal line and a length of 11,5 km with a maximum width of 9 km. It is rocky and up to 616 meters high.


Syros is a up to 442 m high Greek island of the Cyclades, 84 sq.km large. In 8. Century before Christ the island was occupied by Phönizians, which gave it also the name Syros, what so for instance meant “rocky”. A few nautical miles in the northwest of the north point, the uninhabited island Gyaros is situated.


The very small Greek island Telendos belongs to the archipelago of the Dodekanes and is situated in the Ägäis, separated by one only 700 meters broad Sund from the west coast from Kalymnos, to which regular ferry connections exists.

 

Thássos is an island in the northeast of Greece at the Ägäis. The number of the durable inhabitants of the island amounts to about 16.000. The today's principal place is called like the island itself.

 

The Greek island Thirasia is situated in front of the island Santorini at the western edge of the Caldera. It has a width of 2 km and a length of 4,5 km as well as a surface of 9 sq.km and reaches a height of up to 295 meters. At the east coast to the Caldera it falls steeply in the sea, while it drops flat to the west coast.


Tílos is a Greek rock island in the Ägäis sea, belonging to the Dodekanes, in the northwest of Rhodos and in the southern eastof the island Nisyros, with remainders of the old city Telos. The antique poetess Erinna should be born on the island.

Auf der Rugard-Bühne in Rügens Inselhauptstadt Bergen, übrigens eine ehemalige Slawenburg, steht im Monat August der erste Rügener Musical Sommer und ein Live-Konzert mit dem Superstar der deutschen Schlagerbranche – Matthias Reim – auf dem Programm. Zwischen Sommer, Sonne und Ostseestrand ist vom 1. bis 12. August erstmalig ein „Best of“ unter dem Titel Rügener Musical Sommer in der einmaligen Atmosphäre der Rugard-Bühne in Bergen erleben. An zehn Abenden, jeweils um 20 Uhr, verwandelt sich die Freilichtbühne in eine wunderbare Welt aus Show, Tanz und Musik. Ein traumhafter Abend mit eindrucksvollen und natürlich live gesungenen Songs aus den bekanntesten und beliebtesten Musicals, wie König der Löwen, Dirty Dancing, ABBA, Cats, Queen und vielen anderen, erwartet das Publikum. Somit kann man sich auf bekannte Melodien wie „Can you feel the love tonight“ und „Hakuna Matata“, „Time of my life“, „Dancing Queen“ und „Super Trouper“ freuen. Gesungen werden alle Stücke von professionellen Darstellern aus großen Musical-Produktionen, die sich durch grandiose Stimmen und hervorragendes schauspielerisches sowie tänzerisches Können auszeichnen. Am 11. August um 20 Uhr gibt es als Zwischendurch-Highlight das grandiose Live-Konzert mit Matthias Reim, einem der beliebtesten deutschen Schlagersänger.
